Welcome to the Fire Log. The Fire Log will be dedicated to historic entries into early Log books of Wayne Hose Co. #1. Keep coming back for interesting insight into some of the fires and other emergencies that we have responded to over the past 125 years.

January 15, 1936

Shortly before 4:00 this afternoon, an explosion and fire occurred on the Rabinoff property on Circketttown Road, destroying a metal constructed building (located just north of present Victor Drive). There were eight explosions in all and the flames were fed by a ruptured fuel oil tank as well as 5 gallon cans of alcohol. A still took fire and eventually exploded in what was the former theater of an opera school that Max Rabinoff never had much success with. Even old scenery was destroyed

The fire was discovered by Frank Clark as he passed in an auto. Wayne Hose could do little since there was no water in the area, but did wet down burning brush. Early arrivals who could see inside the building stated that the “still” was as large as any in Rockland County. Evidently, there was much recent activity at the site since the entrance road was well worn and showed the chain marks. Newspaper accounts also indicated that the fire smoldered until the next day.

Note: There was a previous fire several years ago at this opera training complex.

October 31, 1991

Mutual aid to Hillcrest for a brush fire. The Halloween night brush fire off of Call Hallow Road kept firemen busy almost five hours. Wayne Hose responded with twenty-eight men and apparatus, 18-1501, 18-1001 and 18-Patrol working under Chief Ray MacKenzie. Six companies battled the blaze with Stony Point laying 500′ of Booster line, 300′ of Forestry hose, 250′ of 1 1/2″ and 250′ of 2 1/2″.

April 19, 1980

A quick stop was made by Wayne Hose Company. Upon arrival at 1:33 A.M. to Master Precision Inc. on Holt Drive, firemen found the loading dock ablaze with wood that had been piled in front of a wooden overhead door. The fire was knocked down quickly with booster tanks and only caused slight damage. We responded with all apparatus. we were on scene for one hour. Chief Robert E. Smith called in the County BCI Arson Unit.

November 1, 1931

Early Sunday morning a fire was discovered in the refreshment stand owned by Carl Gizzi on Grassy Point Beach by a passing motorist. The alarm for Stony Point Fire Department was sounded at 3:30 A.M. When Wayne Hose arrived, the building was a mass of flames and it was impossible for firefighters to save the structure. This was a popular spot on the beach last summer where Rockland County’s first beauty contest was held.

September 24, 1962

Wayne Hose, with a pumper and emergency truck provided mutual aid to the West Haverstraw Fire Department a blaze which destroyed Zugibe’s Hardware Store on Railroad Avenue
